Camera:

 

• We used a Black Magic camera with a macro lens. By using a macro lens we could sustain the high quality filming in extreme close up shots. For example, a close up shot of the actors eye, seeing the detail on various organs in jars and the definition on skull of the cows head.

• The reasoning behind using a Black Magic digital camera is that they are cost effective for the school, instant watch back of the footage and mobile to move around the set. We were able to quickly transfer our footage to the editing suit computers ready to edit the following week. However, if we were to use a reel camera it would take a lot of expense and time to process the footage. 

• The digital camera enabled us to include: panning shots, tilt shots, subject shots, close up shots, eye match cuts, extreme close up shots, medium shots, wide shots and birds eye view shots.

Microphone:

​

• We used a directional, boom microphone. 

• We used a directional microphone to capture some of the sounds of: footsteps, turning the lid off a jar and the muffling of hanging a jacket up. However, in the end when editing we decided not to use any of the diegetic sound as it detracted from the mysterious atmosphere which was better created by silence and non-diegetic music to heighten the visuals.

• We found that it was not necessary to use a windshield as we set our opening sequence inside, therefore there was no need to worry about wind. It should also be noted that we did not include any dialogue therefore we didn't need the 'dead cat' to minimise the sound of breath. 

 

Monitor:

• We used the monitor to analyse the filming during the shoot. For example, we were able to see if we needed to adjust the lighting intensity or positioning of the camera. The monitor enabled all of the team to see the images more easily than gathering around the small camera screen.

Mobile phone:

 

• This was an important communication tool for the day making sure our actor knew when we were ready for him. 

• We used the app notes on our iPhones to review the list of shots we wanted to shoot with specific props and angles, forming a checklist we could repeatedly refer to.

Lighting: 

​

• We incorporated an LED neon bar light to allow us to form shadows by moving the light around the studio. This is also helped us when we struggled to see the props in the darkness of the studio making the props more visible. 

• As well as this, the lighting helped us create the intense mood and atmosphere of our piece.
